You have an interview booked for your dream job.
Landing it could be life-changing. More money, better opportunities for professional growth, and greater fulfillment. But, you are probably competing with 6 – 8 other qualified candidates. Who will win?

Imagine the poor interviewers. They need to discern the best candidate from the bunch; the one with the best mix of competencies and personality traits that will deliver the business results and advance the company culture. They have an hour to learn all about who you are as a professional, and how that fits the job requirements. The interview comes on top of their already hectic schedules. That’s a big assignment. Even bigger is the task of doing this with 6 – 8 candidates, often with one interview after the other. By the time of the interviewer de-brief, it is not uncommon for the interviewers to be mentally exhausted, and some even become confused about which candidate said what. Hardly an optimal environment for making such an important decision!

So, who wins? Often the candidate that lands the job is the one who communicates their value most clearly and compellingly, and develops a genuine rapport with the interviewers – not necessarily the best qualified.
This means that communicating your value to an interviewer is a skill, usually separate from the ones required by the job.

My career coincided with dramatic growth in the industry. I had to become great at screening resumes, interviewing candidates, and making wise hiring choices. I enjoyed the benefits of good hiring decisions and lived the consequences of poor ones. I came to appreciate well-prepared candidates. Why? Because they made my task easier – the task of assessing the their skills, personality traits and potential, vis-a- vis the job requirements. Sometimes, I saw a candidate being offered the position even though they probably were not the best qualified. They were chosen because their profile was the clearest - and thus the least risky.
